Denis & Zina Pepper – S/Y Electra II 2008
I would like to take the opportunity of recommending the work of Ilhan Demir to other yacht owners at Marmaris, Turkey. By June ’08, my 22 year old ketch ‘Electra II’ was in urgent need of work on the decks since the recaulking I had done 3 years previously was beginning to melt in the Turkish summer heat resulting in people’s feet tranporting black patches all over the yacht. Ilhan Demir came to see me very promptly and gave me a written estimate within 48 hours. I had already decided on the parameters of price and since Ilhan’s estimate came within those figures, I did not bother to get another estimate. I was also impressed with Ilhan as a person – I felt that I could trust him and that I would have no problems in communicating with him – partly because his English is very good and partly because I found that his character is one that inspires confidence. I am pleased to say that I have not changed my views about him. My original intention was to endure the problem until the winter but Ilhan offered to complete the work during the period between mid July & August when, like many others, I returned home to avoid the Turkish summer heat. I stressed that that the timing was very tight. Ilhan was good to his word. Electra II was lifted out on Monday 7th July 2008 and by 9am the following morning, the Demir boys were removing the thousands of screws that held the old decking down. By the time Friday the 11th August came (when I was due to fly home), the fibreglass had been screeded and sealed and the first peices of new teak were beginning to be laid. Electra II was lifted back into the water on the 15th August – 5 weeks after work started. We flew back on the 14th August to tidy, clean and supervise the placing of the final peices of equipment like the windlass. Right at the beginning of the contact, Ilhan told me ‘’Look, I cannot be watching my boys all the time, there might be mistakes, but please just tell me because these things can be corrected’’. Well, there really were not any mistakes that are worth mentioning – but it was good to know the facility was there. The quality of the teak was good. The work was carefully and sympathetically done. The caulking was clean and tidy. There was plenty of attention to detail. The work was completed on time. The price was half what I was quoted in England (admittedly at Berthon Marine, Lymington some 12 years previously). I have nothing but priase for Ilhan and his men – and his beautiful wife Yasemin who, when I passed over some old clothes as rags for the workshop, misunderstood and promptly washed tham all and returned them to the boat! Ilhan is a person who always seemed prepared to ‘go the extra mile’ to the extent that he did several extra things as ‘presents’ which he did not charge for. Thank you Ilhan. I wish you and your family good health, happiness and prosperity.
Mark Sobel - SV Arcturus 2008
Thank you for the professional, prompt and courteous services we received while at Yacht Marine during the spring and early summer. Your tests and careful evaluation of our wet, blistered hull and analytical review of the options available has been greatly appreciated. The stripping of the gel coat and the first layer of fibreglass, hot vac osmosis treatment, replacement of the fibreglass layer and the epoxy gel coat have given my 20 year old Tashiba a lighter dry hull with a new epoxy barrier coat. Your work ethics have exceeded my highest expectations. Once more thank you for your excellent performance.
Robert Kinnane - Nausicaa 2008
Demir Marine were engaged to :- • Maintain and cover vessle on hardstand during the winter • Repair epoxy water tank • Service Yanmar 160 HP main engine • Service ONAN auxillary engine • Manage purchase of spare parts and signage • Supervise electrical works • Re-plumb tanks to skin fittings • Service refridgeration cooling systems The work was done in a timely and professional manner for a competitive price. Mr Ilhan Demir is the principal of the business and exhibits a high degree of knowledge of motor and sailing yachts and their working systems. His treatment of customers is friendly, honest and professional and I would recommend Demir Marine be invited to quote and advise on small vessle repair and maintenance. I would engage Demir Marine for future maintenance work on our vessel.
Ray & Pam Memery – S/Y Bingtang 2008
In the past 12 months, Demir Marine have completed 3 significant pieces of work on Bingtang, namely :- • The modification of our old chain locker by removing the old anchor well, replacing it with fully reinforced decking, providing an expanded chain locker and larger in board access. Additionally, they also supplied and fitted a Lofrans windlass including all internal electric cabling • The removal of an existing baby stay, replacing it with lower port and starboard shrouds, fully supported with stainless steel plates to fit the internal bulkheads of the boat • The painting of the GRP upper decking on Bingtang, including the repair of all the ‘historical scars’, priming and finishing with 2 coats of epoxy paint For each of these jobs, Ilhan Demir provided detailed written quotations, were very happy to discuss the detail and amend as required. The quality of the work was of a very high standard, Ilhan was very involved in the chain locker job, suggesting improvements as the work progressed. During the GRP painting we were in the UK but were provided with a selection of digital pictures at key stages of the project. The works were generally complete in a timely manner and all within the agreed price. We are delighted with the results and were particularly impressed with the obvious pride that the stainless steel man, carpenter and painter took in their jobs, and the way they individually sought assurance from us that we were happy with the results of their work.
Nigel & Deb Button – S/Y Destiny 2008
We had been considering for sometime that the deck of our HR 352 was getting to the stage of needing replacement. We had heard that Demir Marine was very efficient at this type of work. We were able to view a couple of other HR 352’s that they had refurbished the decks on. Having seen the quality of craftmanship, we decided to speak with Ilhan about this endeavour. We found Ilhan to be conscientious and professional yet had a very personable quality and his quote for the work was competitive. The replacement of the deck was carried out during the winter months while we were away. We were sent updated photos on a weekly basis so we could follow the progress. Upon our return, we were extremely pleased with the workmanhip and quality of the deck and cockpit. We have had many compliments and would like to take the opportunity to pass the word onto others who are looking for good quality work. We had also decided to have the framework for a bimini fitted and once again Ilhan came to discuss the project. We are very pleased with the strength, quality and design as Destiny was a low boom and centre cockpit and therefore more difficult to create a practical sun shade. We think it is important to mention not only about the fine work but also how Ilhan made himself available for any questions or concerns we had throughout the project. Thank you Demir Marine, Ilhan and your team for a job well done.
Kirsten & Eugene Bannon -S/Y Sandpiper of London 2008
Yanmar Engine Service – Demir Marine, situated in Marmaris Yacht Marine, sorted our persistent problem that we had had over a number of years, with the engine overheating. Approved Yanmar agents in other countries were unsuccessful in solving the problem. We can thoroughly recommend Demir Marine for Yanmar engine services.
Dave Tuson - S/Y Second Wind 2008
I have just had completed some structural work and a stainless steel solar panel arch constructed on my yacht by Demir Marine. The work was completed one week ahead of schedule and to my absolute satisfaction. The price quoted was the price asked; the workmanship was excellent; the quality of the materials used were of excellent quality and the price was the same or may be even cheaper than if I had bought it wholesale. I would have no hesitation in recommending this company to anyone anticipating repairs or stainless steel work. Whenever I visit their workshops, they were clean and tidy in keeping with their work on my boat.
Jack & Laurie King – Horizons 2008
Demir Marine provided all our yacht technical services with the exception of our electrical works :- • Lloyds approved rigging including Sta-Lok and Navtec • Carpentry • Deck replacement • Specialist spray painting • Osmosis treatment • Design and fabrication of stainless steel • Spares and parts sourcing and adaptations • Guardianage • Interior and exterior cleaning We used Demir Marine for 2 jobs – re-rigging our staysail stay and modifying our original American plumbing to remove kinks in the system and to make it comply with European regulations. (We had no way to pump out once the waste was in the holding tank, other than from the deck fitting). We were pleased with the outcome of both jobs, although both were more complex than had been estimated. However, we had been warned that if the re-rigging job required specialist fittings, it would be more expensive. It did, because the original equipment was American were into an American stud. The good quality wire Demir used was European so the stud had to be replaced. In the second job, the original pump was fitted but broke and had to be replaced with a better quality pump. We paid more for the better pump (and were not charged for the one that broke). Also, in inspecting the hose to the deck attaching to the pump, it was found to be corroded and had to be replaced – requiring more hose and time than initially anticipated. Ilhan’s work teams are efficient, neat and careful. He does not use outside contractors which means that he has complete control over the quality of his team. Our plumbing job required four days yet each night the work site (our saloon) was left neat, and in the four days there was virtually no odour. One member of the team will usually have enough English to communcate, but Ilhan will intervene if there is a real communication problem, as can come up when plumbing is involved and the need to comply with regulations in differnt countries and hemispheres. We are aware of others who have used other services offered by Demir Marine and who were pleased. We were very pleased with the service we received.
David & Lesley Ball – S/Y Pigra 2007
We had teak decks replaced during the winter. We have been pleased with the outcome. The boat looks beautiful. We were dealt with by Ilhan in a very courteous way an were sent E:Mail photos at various stages to keep us up to date with progress. The work was delivered on time and I would have no hesitation in recommending this company for work projects.
Trevor & Sue Hutson – S/Y LUCIFER 2007
Two years ago we purchased a 44ft sloop in a somewhat sad condition. The first thing we had to do was treat the hull for a severe case of osmosis. Having surfed the internet and obtained various quotes, we chose to entrust Demir Marine with the Hot Vac treatment. We were so happy with the results, we decided to keep our yacht in Marmaris in order that Demir Marine could undertake the complete refurbishment of the boat. The work has included replacement of all internal and external upholstery, fitting new sails, replacement of both standing and running rigging, electrical work, complete refurbishment of all internal woodwork and many, many other tasks. In all cases, we have received a wonderful service from Demir Marine. The Owner – Ilhan Demir – who speaks fluent English, runs a very professional outift. His staff are skilled and courteous and their work neat and clean. In all cases, we have been extremely pleased with their workmanship. We have owned various boats over a period of 30 plus years and Demir Marine is, without doubt, the best company that we have dealt with in terms of yacht management and technical services. If you require top quality work that is guaranteed, at a reasonable price and delivered on time, we would heartily recommend that you consider this company.
Mark & Murphy Sobel - SV Arcturus 2007
The sailing vessel Arcturus has experienced professional, knowledgeable and personal courteous services from Ilhan Demir of Demir Marine. We engaged his form to remove our single existing diesel fuel tank and design, manufacture and install a replacement multiple tank system. His ability to foresee and avoid problems enabled the work to be completed in a timely manner, on budget, and to our demanding satisfaction. We personally recommend him to our cruising friends.
Klaus and Marlies Schuback – S/Y White Wings 2007
After our disaster in the Red Sea earlier this year where our S/Y White Wings, an Oyster 485, got de-masted and seriously damaged, I was somewhat helpless and didn’t know where to get to get White Wings restored in the same quality as it used to be. Oyster Marine highly recommended that I should go to Marmaris and they explicitly recommended Demir Marine, as they have made excellent experiences in the past with the quality of work you delivered to various Oyster owners. Now after our S/Y White Wings has been restored completely, we are impressed and satisfied with your project management, the support of your team and the quality of the work that has been done. We got a new mast, new rig, new pushpit, pulpit and stanchions, new cap rail, repair of the teak deck, repair of the mast timber cover panel, repairs to the gelcoat etc etc. S/Y White Wings looks like new and we love her as much as we did before. Well done and thank you very much. We’ll keep you and your team in our memories.
Sidney & Rebecca Shaw – Yacht Dovka 2007
My wife and I first met Ilhan Demir in 2002. He had been recommended to us by several cruiser friends and we had his firm do a few small maintenance jobs in our boat. We were very satisfied with the way these jobs were carried out. So, when it became necessary to replace the 22 year old teak deck on our Hallberg Rassy 352 Dovka, we naturally solicited a quotation from him. Ilhan’s quote was competitive and our prior experience led us to select Demir Marine to do the work which was carried out in the summer of 2007. Although completing the job took slightly longer than the estimated 5-6 weeks, the Demir Marine carpenters did a superb job in all respects. All of the workmen who participated in the job did professional work and treated our boat with great care and respect. The details of teak planking, particularly the manner in which the planks were joined along the margins of the deck and at the perimeter of the deck hatches were beautifully done and were far superior to those originally done by Hallberg Rassy. Most of the time, while the re-decking work was in progress, my wife and I were travelling overseas. While we were away, the Demir Marine Project Manager kept us advised of the work progress via E:Mail, including photos of the work. I found Ilhan Demir to be accessible and easy to communicate with throughout the job. He and his workers did all that they promised and more. Ilhan is very knowledgeable on a wide range of boat subjects and very willing to provide good advice on subjects beyond the scope of the work for which we had contracted. I have no hesitation in recommending the services of Ilhan Demier and Demir Marine for any boat maintenance or repair tasks, big or small.
